That’s it, it’s all over for another year; well the Tour de France is, but my season continues. Next up, San Sebastian.
So, what’s it like to photograph bike racing for a living? Believe it or not, it’s not International travel and riches beyond your wildest dreams. Like a lot of guys on the World Tour, I freelance. So basically, I bank roll all my own expenses and hopefully sell enough pictures to make a profit. Every dollar you save whilst on the road adds to the bottom line. To help with this, a lot of us travel together, sharing accommodation, hire cars and hotel rooms. At the Tour de France, I take this cost cutting to the next level and live out of my van, much to the amusement of my colleagues. With a fold-out mattress and a camping stove I’m good to go on my three-week jaunt around France, pitching up pretty much anywhere I feel like and living on a diet of baked beans and baguettes.
