Bulletin: New Disc Brake Rims from Zipp

454 NSW TUBELESS DISC-BRAKE

It’s aerodynamically efficient and stable in all wind conditions. What’s more, a wider rim is designed for tubeless tires at lower pressure for reduced rolling resistance and vibration damping, so you’ll lose as little energy as possible out on the road. This wheel is optimized for 25mm tubeless tires for all out speed.

The 454 NSW features Zipp’s most advanced technologies. Its undulating 58mm Sawtooth rim shape with Hyperfoils is our most aerodynamic and stable wheel in the 404 family. The 454 NSW Tubeless Disc- brake wheelset is roughly a pound (more than 400 grams) lighter than its predecessor!

Zipp’s use of hookless (straight side) rims in the 454 NSW is integral to Making You Faster. With hookless, the transition between the tire and the rim is more seamless and aero. Zipp’s hookless rims have more efficient resin distribution, which means lighter, stronger wheels.

Outdoor testing commissioned by Zipp revealed the real-world gains of Zipp Total System Efficiency (TSE). A bike-and-rider system weighing 85kg (187lbs) on the new 454 NSW with 25mm tires required 278 watts to maintain a speed of 40kph. That’s a 10-watt savings compared with the previous model 454 NSW.

At the center of the 454 NSW is the Cognition V2 Hubset re-engineered with an updated Axial Clutch V2 mechanism for quicker engagement, lower friction, and improved durability.

404 FIRECREST DISC-BRAKE

Zipp’s 404 Firecrest Tubeless Disc-brake is the icon of speed with three decades of use.

The 404’s heritage as Zipp’s icon of speed extends back decades, and its future is even brighter. At 58mm deep, the 404 Firecrest Tubeless is ideal for road races, time trial and triathlon, and gran fondos. The wheelset’s 23mm internal width is perfect for running wider tubeless tires at reduced air pressure. That is a vital component of Total System Efficiency, or TSE, an approach to speed on ever-changing roads and riding conditions. Specifically, TSE focuses on overcoming specific barriers to speed: wind resistance, gravity, rolling resistance, and vibration losses. Zipp’s ABLC Sawtooth Technology uses an intricate dimpling pattern to improve aero efficiency. Zipp’s use of hookless (straight side) rims in the 404 Firecrest is integral to Making You Faster. With hookless, the transition between the tire and the rim is more seamless and aero. Zipp’s hookless rims have more efficient resin distribution, which means lighter, stronger wheels.

Outdoor testing commissioned by Zipp revealed the real-world gains of Zipp TSE. A bike- and-rider system weighing 85kg (187lbs) on the new 404 Firecrest with 25mm tires required 286 watts to maintain a speed of 40kph. That’s a 4-watt savings compared with the previous model 404 Firecrest.

At the center of the 404 Firecrest Tubeless Disc-brake is a versatile and durable hubset, the German-engineered ZR1 DB. If you had to choose just one wheel for road riding and racing, the 404 Firecrest Tubeless Disc brake is a savvy and speedy choice.

858 NSW DISC-BRAKE

Zipp’s ultimate aero weapon is fast in the wind (thanks to its undulating rim shape) and on the ground (thanks to tubeless). Now, the 858 NSW is even better with an improved hubset.

You get the many aero advantages of the 858 NSW Tubeless wheelset with the added benefit of increased cornering grip and compliance with reduced rolling resistance of tubeless. The wheelset’s 18mm internal width is optimized for running wider tires at reduced air pressure. The 858 NSW’s undulating rim shape, our proprietary Sawtooth profile, takes design cues from nature for our highest performing wheel when it comes to aero efficiency and crosswind stability.

These structures inspired Zipp advanced development engineers to, for the first time, systematically apply biomimicry to solve the complex challenge of designing a wheel, with the undulating Hyperfoil nodes, that reduces both aerodynamic drag and side force. When it comes time to scrub off speed or stop, disc brakes will give you the confidence and stopping power you need. Simply put, the 858 NSW Tubeless Disc brake is ideal for those focused on triathlon, time trials, or aggressive road riding.

The 858 NSW’s Cognition DB V2 Hubset is re-engineered with Axial Clutch V2 for quicker engagement and lower friction. Every time a conventional hubset starts to coast, friction within the freehub ratchet mechanism works like a drum brake to slow the rider down. The drag between the hub shell and driver body during coasting is considered as efficiency loss, especially for road wheels. The solution?

The rear Cognition DB V2 hub with AxialClutch V2 technology reduces drag by disengaging the ratchet mechanism when coasting. The AxialClutch V2’s wave spring acts to reengage the ratchet mechanism quickly and consistently once the rider starts pedaling. The hubset also is lightweight and durable.
